Naturally Occuring Radioactive Material

NORM Treatment Unit NTU

The safe disposal of NORM-containing waste is possible thanks to the innovative ZETTL technology for stabilization.

NORM waste often occurs during the extraction of natural gas, as well as during the dismantling of extraction areas. NORM residues can also occur in drinking water treatment or sewage sludge as well as in geothermal energy.

The ZETTL technology uses both physical stabilization by mixing with other materials and placing in special containers and chemical stabilization to reduce or prevent the mobility of the residues. This guarantees safe incorporation of the nuclides (frequently Ra-226, Ra-228, Th-228, Pb/Po 210). Penetration of these nuclides into the groundwater is prevented and safe final disposal in landfills is made possible.

The ZETTL system operates dust-free and emphasizes the highest occupational safety principles for employees when handling naturally radioactive substances. The technology has been used successfully for over 20 years. Many thousands of tons of NORM-containing material have been disposed of safely and in compliance with the law.
